Hello and welcome. You are listening to WKNC 88.1 Raleigh. I'm your host, Kendall, and this is off the Record. Here with me today is Girl Brutal, a techno DJ from North Carolina who seems to be taking over the local electronic music scene. So do you mind introducing yourself for the listeners who may or may not be familiar with you or your music?

00:20
Girl Brutal
Hey, I'm Girl Brutal. I'm based out of Charlotte and I love techno.

00:27
Kendall
Awesome. Perfect. Okay, I have to ask because ever since I discovered your music, I saw that album cover of Heather and it reminded me so much of Donnie Darko. Like the bunny from Donnie Darko?

00:37
Girl Brutal
Yeah, yeah. I actually had somebody draw that for me and yeah, I agree. I mean, I definitely get that a lot and it kind of was like, honestly unintentional. But like, I like it now that I kind of see the comparison. I'm like, okay, that's pretty cool. But it definitely wasn't intentional at first. But I love that movie.

00:59
Kendall
So yeah, I know.

01:00
Girl Brutal
I'm totally fine with it.

01:02
Kendall
And then how did you get into music? Like, what's the origin story of Girl Brutal and what did that look like for you?

01:08
Girl Brutal
Yeah, well, I mean, I've been doing music for pretty much my whole life. I used to do like classical piano growing up in college. I did like some acting and things like that. And I just got involved in like the local scene watching a lot of more like punk bands and just kind of started diving into that kind of music and stumbled upon an artist called Machine Girl, which is kind of more of that like digital hardcore. And hearing that, I kind of was like, that's really cool, like to involve like electronic music and like punk music and live music. So I kind of just kind of dove into this world of electronic music that's a little more obscure and weird and kooky and I don't know, the pipeline just kind of led to where I'm at now.

01:56
Girl Brutal
Like, I just really like that, like fast paced, like non stop, constant movement. And it's just like, it was like my eyes got like opened up to a whole new world. Like, this is it for me. This is cool. But I've definitely been involved in like so many different types of music and I think it's good as an artist to like explore everything until you find that pocket that feels like you. And I definitely feel like I've found that now. So yeah, definitely.

02:22
Kendall
That's super cool. Did you go to a lot of concerts and stuff before you started making music? And that kind of like cultivated Your preference in music taste or what did that?

02:33
Girl Brutal
Yeah, I mean, I guess, like, I more so went to local shows other than concerts. Just going to like. I mean, in Charlotte we have the Milestone, which is a venue I still frequent, Snug harbor. So just kind of supporting local music and I feel like it just felt a little bit more like, authentic. But yeah, definitely. The local scene gave me a lot of inspiration to want to get involved myself. Yeah, we have a really awesome scene here.

03:02
Kendall
No, definitely. I've noticed that as I've started getting into the local artists for interviewing them for the radio station, obviously. And I had no idea the amount of artists that were all in this area. And everyone is so welcoming and kind and it's just like really exciting to, you know, talk to a lot of people from it.

03:21
Girl Brutal
I agree. Even the triangle scene, like, I've been getting more out there a little bit. Everyone is just so cool, super unique. Like, I feel like everyone, like, has their own sound that doesn't really sound like anybody else to me, which I think is super cool. So, yeah, we're super lucky.

03:37
Kendall
Definitely. Do you have a favorite place that you like performing? Like Charlotte Durham, Raleigh.

03:44
Girl Brutal
As of now, I've had the most fun at Black Box in Charlotte, which is a more like EDM type space. But as far as, like, I used to do more live performing and I really loved the Milestone. I just feel like it has its own charm. It's been there for a while. Super great community and just like kind of hole in the wall. Little crusty punk venue. Definitely.

04:06
Kendall
Yeah.

04:06
Girl Brutal
But Black Box definitely, like, puts me into a whole other world for sure. Just being in that, like, dark room with all the, like cool lasers and lights and stuff and the loud sub, it just like, you feel it. It's real nice.

04:20
Kendall
Yeah. What is performing live feel like to you?

04:24
Girl Brutal
I kind of feel like. Honestly, it like starts and then it ends. I feel like everything during. I'm like in a trance almost. It's almost like something like takes over and you kind of just let the music grip. Like when I practice at home, like, I. I'm so hyper focused on how I'm sounding, what I'm doing, and then when I'm live, it kind of is just like a. I can just do anything. For some reason, like, the adrenaline kicks in and I just get lost in it. And it just feels very, like, freeing for sure. Just like the. The true point of why I do music is to just express myself and let go. And I kind of like that I can just like fall into that without having to focus too much on what I'm doing, just trusting myself.

05:10
Kendall
Yeah, no, for sure. And do you think that music is like the most authentic form that you can express yourself in? I guess.

05:18
Girl Brutal
I mean, yes, if that's like your calling. I suppose. Like, I feel like everyone has their own like, little gift and thing that they can use to express themselves. For me, that's definitely music. I feel like a lot of people do resonate with that. Even just listening to music, aside from performing it just. I don't know, I feel like truly without music in my life, I would probably be like a hollow shell. Like, it's truly like just everything.

05:43
Kendall
Definitely. No, that makes total sense. And the other artists that I've interviewed as well have also said what a big part music plays in their life. And that's really cool to see.

05:53
Girl Brutal
Yeah, definitely.

05:54
Kendall
And you just performed at Motorcoat in Durham, right?

05:58
Girl Brutal
I was supposed to. I actually got super sick like two days before. Yeah. So I had to unfortunately drop out of that one. It was just so bad. But I was at Betsy's Barn in Boone most recently. As far as out of town shows.

06:14
Kendall
Yeah.

06:14
Girl Brutal
And I played at Black Box last weekend in Charlotte and that was really fun.

06:19
Kendall
That's really cool. How do you describe your community that you so like, you perform at these shows and I'm sure like people recognize you, come up and talk to you. I've seen you post on your stories a little bit and it's like, thanks for chatting with me after the show. Like, what kind of people do you meet at those environments?

06:34
Girl Brutal
Yeah, I mean, as of lately, it's been like a lot of. It's been a lot of rave people for sure. I feel like that's more of where I've been lately versus like the live performance scene. But everyone is just super like welcoming, very friendly, approachable, like. And honestly, like, everyone's a friend, like, truly, like, I feel like over time I've remembered, like I see like faces and it's people who have been coming to see me for like a few years now. And it's super special. I definitely feel like I have a very unique crowd. They've like. I've had people make me like shirts and custom pants and stickers and Yeah, I have like, people have like done drawings and just made me a whole bunch of really cool things. Somebody recently gave me like two arm sleeves full of like candy bracelets.

07:25
Kendall
I'm obsessed.

07:27
Girl Brutal
I know. They're so cute. I definitely feel very lucky. I just feel like everyone just treats me like I'm like family or a friend. And I feel the same way back. So it definitely feels like a close knit community almost rather than just like a fan to artist relationship, you know? Like, it feels a lot deeper than.

07:47
Kendall
That for me, most definitely. And this is kind of an off topic question, but for the candy bracelets, do people at your shows do the peace, love, unity and they switch. I always miss that so much. I went to a bunch of raves because I'm from Colorado, and so I went to a bunch of like raves at Red Rocks in Colorado and I just missed the music scene there. Everyone is so kind.

08:09
Girl Brutal
I know. I just. I love it so much. I was at Red Rocks earlier this year too, for like the first time. And like looking out like behind the stage at that overview, if you remember. Oh, my gosh, it's just so cool.

08:21
Kendall
It is. I think about that all the time. I'm like, take me back.

08:25
Girl Brutal
I know. Who did you see? I have to know.

08:27
Kendall
Oh, gosh. I've seen Subtronics three times there.

08:32
Girl Brutal
Oh, that's so cool.

08:34
Kendall
I saw Shaquille O' Neal, actually, which was crazy. Yeah, D.J. Diesel. And it was epic. I mean, and it was during the winter and so I'm wearing a onesie and I'm just like headbanding to Shaquille o'. Neal. And I was like, what the heck is going on? Yeah.

08:48
Girl Brutal
And then he's on my bucket list.

08:50
Kendall
He's good. And it was like, oh. I was like, this is crazy.

08:53
Girl Brutal
I love that.

08:54
Kendall
Pipeline and then ganja. White Knight. I've seen him there.

08:59
Girl Brutal
That's so awesome.

09:00
Kendall
Yeah, I think a couple more artists, but Red Rocks is an awesome venue. Oh, and Zed's Dead. I've seen Zed's Dead like twice.

09:06
Girl Brutal
Oh, yeah, I saw Skrillex when I went. He played like a five hour set. Oh, my gosh, it was crazy.

09:10
Kendall
I'm so.

09:11
Girl Brutal
No pee breaks.

09:14
Kendall
And have you seen Millennium?

09:16
Girl Brutal
I'm not yet. I've been told so many times. But honestly, like, I don't know. I really like the dirty nasty and I feel like Millennium too, like Ascending Therapy. Like, I don't know, maybe I'll give it more of a chance, but.

09:29
Kendall
No, that's so fair. Yeah, yeah. I've seen him once at Decadence. It's like this huge festival at the convention center in Colorado.

09:38
Girl Brutal
Yeah, I've heard of that.

09:40
Kendall
It was just like. It was epic. It was wonderful.

09:44
Girl Brutal
Amazing.

09:45
Kendall
Okay. Have you heard Genesis by Grimes?

09:49
Girl Brutal
Yes.

09:49
Kendall
Okay. The beginning of Heather Reminds me so much of that song. Was there any inspiration from there, or did they just kind of sound similar?

09:57
Girl Brutal
Actually, I. The inspiration for Heather was from a Brutalistness 3000 song. There's a song called Ice Bear, and definitely, like, the flow of that song. Like, I even say I, like, directly sample the stabs, like, in the chorus, too, like, from that other song. I totally see what you mean, though. I do love that song. Yeah, brutalism is. 3000 Was definitely like, the bread and butter for Heather. Yeah, they're. They're like, kind of what I wanted girl brutal to be at first, like a. Like a hard techno. Like, every song is four on the floor with, like, a girl screaming. But then I'm like, that's two on the nose. Because even our names are kind of similar. But I just want to do one song like them. So that's kind of why I made Heather, definitely.

10:42
Kendall
And I pulled some lyrics from this, and it was, if you only think of sex, then you shouldn't wear a crown. I can't stand to think of all the things that you've done. What was the inspiration behind, like, that verse? And I guess more of the lyrics in that song as well.

10:55
Girl Brutal
Yeah. Honestly, I wrote that about, like, abusers in the scene, especially artists who are abusers, because I feel like it's so prevalent and, like, I don't want to speak on the record too much about it, but I used to be close with someone who ended up being an abuser who was a performer, and it just kind of. I kind of wrote that song about that. Just kind of, like, the betrayal and kind of the. Like, you should not have a platform and represent our scene if those are your morals. So that's kind of what that line is about.

11:32
Kendall
Definitely. No, I'm sorry. You experienced that. Yeah. And what is the process of going into, like, making a single versus an ep? What does that look like?

11:43
Girl Brutal
I mean, honestly, like, I'm really bad about waiting. I mean, I have, like, one ep, which is, like, two songs. I feel like a single is kind of, like, supposed to be a teaser for what people can expect on, like, an EP or an album. Like, kind of just like a vibe. An ep. I feel like you're curating, like, an emotional journey, like, top to bottom, like, how songs are laid out, like, where do you want the energy to go? And that's definitely something I think about, like, when I'm DJing to, like, the curation of the set versus the curation of, like, a listening experience at home. So I feel like that's how I personally see, like, singles versus EPs or albums, but with peace and love towards myself. I'm very bad about, like, releasing music and saving my stuff.

12:37
Girl Brutal
Like, I'll make something good and I'm like, I just want to release it now. I want everyone to hear this. And I don't, like, I don't save anything.

12:44
Kendall
Fair enough. I mean, I feel like if I was a music artist, I'd be like, I'm sharing this immediately. Like, I'm proud of this. Like, this is going out.

12:51
Girl Brutal
And I'm kind of like, you know what? I'm not personally, Like, I'm not trying to be, like, a super big. Like, I don't want to get, like, out of surrounding states even. Like. So I'm kind of just doing a lot of this for pure enjoyment and fun. So I guess I like, don't really care about, like, having to do things any sort of way. I'm just kind of doing what feels right for me, I guess. So I've just been releasing, like, stuff here and there.

13:17
Kendall
Yeah, no, for sure.

13:18
Girl Brutal
Whoever wants to listen to it can.

13:20
Kendall
I mean, you've obviously, like, collected a community of people who enjoy listening to your music, and I think that, you know, that takes the expectations off it. If you just do it for fun and it's purely for your enjoyment, then it's like, not for anyone else. And there's no pressure on that.

13:35
Girl Brutal
Yeah, and I think it feels really good to know that people can see that as well. Like, I've definitely gotten a lot of messages of people saying, like, I can tell that, like, there's a lot of passion and there's a story behind this set or behind the song. And it feels good to feel like it's not industry, I suppose, and it just feels authentic. That's, you know, I've always wanted it to be. So it feels nice that it's being, like, translated that way too.

14:03
Kendall
Yeah, most definitely. How do you think that your, like, mindset and identity has changed the more you've been in the music scene?

14:10
Girl Brutal
Yeah, that's honestly kind of hard. I've definitely changed in terms of, like, what I'm creating and what I want to put out and. And be represented as. I. I suppose, if that makes sense. Like, when I started in the scene, I did more live music. Like I said, I played bass in a couple bands before I transitioned into the electronic stu and kind of taking on that role, doing the electronic stuff and being more of, like, a front woman. It was more of a responsibility to, you know, Be like a leader and be someone who's like, you know, standing up for what's right and representing the scene properly versus like kind of just being off the sides. Like now you're a voice too. So it definitely put a little bit more pressure on me to like, what do I want to say?

15:01
Girl Brutal
What do I have to say? And now that I'm DJing, because honestly, like, doing like vocals and stuff was super stressful. Like, I'm not a lyricist, like, by any means. Like, I much prefer the music side of things. And now that I've fallen into like more DJing, it feels like I can relax and just take a step back and be comfortable and like, this is what I'm good at and kind of representing myself and who I am through like music really. And. And I think that's truly my comfort zone.

15:37
Kendall
Yeah, no, for sure. I think that's really cool. And what do you like, what's going through your head when you perform a song, like when you're recording it versus live?

15:49
Girl Brutal
Honestly, I mean, I don't really know. Honestly, I feel like when I record a song, I tend to overanalyze it because I want it to sound perfect, I suppose. So I tend to start to read too into my music and I'm like, oh, this kind of sucks now. But then when I do it live, it kind of hits way different and you get this like, rush that you can't replicate in a recording studio. At least I can't. So I definitely feel like live I feel a lot more proud and passionate about my stuff than in a recording studio. But, you know, that's just me.

16:31
Kendall
Yeah, no, I would completely agree. And I think that when you're in the recording studio, you don't get the energy of the crowd. And I think that plays a big role in people's performance.

16:41
Girl Brutal
Well, yeah, definitely. I mean, a crowd certainly, it's kind of like a two way street because it's your job to, you know, make people have a good time, but also like, you have a better time because they're having a good time. You know, it's kind of like you gotta work together. Yeah, but I've definitely played sets to like a standstill crowd before and played sets to a hype crowd. And it truly does like weigh on you if people are just standing there. So it's good to see people having a good time.

17:11
Kendall
Yeah, no, for sure. I can't imagine if I was DJing to stand still crowd, I would have to like take a minute and be like, it's Not a reflection of me.

17:18
Girl Brutal
Like, it's not a reflection of me right now. I definitely had, like, I don't even remember what it was, but I'm like trying all these different genres to see, like, what makes these guys tick.

17:29
Kendall
Nothing.

17:30
Girl Brutal
And I was like, all right, you know what, I'm just going to take this with a grain of salt and have fun and just do my own thing.

17:37
Kendall
Yeah.

17:37
Girl Brutal
I mean, and it never bugs me too much, but like, at first it definitely was like, damn.

17:43
Kendall
I feel like it's kind of adjacent to stand up comedy. I don't know if you've ever done that or been to like a comedy show, but I admire stand up comedians so much to just get up there and spitball in front of a crowd, like. Yeah, I couldn't imagine.

17:57
Girl Brutal
Yeah, we have a venue locally here called Crown Station and sometimes they do open mic, like comedy nights. And I went to see my friend perform and it was definitely a tough crowd. I was like, you brave. You're so brave.

18:10
Kendall
You.

18:10
Girl Brutal
That is like, way more courageous than I could ever be, honestly.

18:13
Kendall
Yeah. Speaking of open mic nights, have you ever performed at one or, you know, spoken at one?

18:20
Girl Brutal
I've performed at an open mic night, like years ago, I think, like once, but I, I don't really do them often. Yeah, I, I think I, I did one at like a restaurant and that's it. Yeah, I don't really perform at too many of them, but I, I like to go and watch though. For sure.

18:42
Kendall
Yeah, definitely. I've been to one at a local coffee shop and people were sharing their poems and stuff and their writings and it's just really cool to see like, people come together with their creativity and like what they hold special and then share that with others.

18:56
Girl Brutal
Yeah, I love that too. I think it's like a really good opportunity for people to like get comfortable even performing in front of a crowd. Because that's like the thing that a lot of artists are very like, I guess jaunted, if that's the right word about at first. Yeah, it is a bit like.

19:12
Kendall
Oh, yeah, how did you get, did you ever have stage fright or like public speaking? Were you afraid of that? And how did you like, persevere?

19:21
Girl Brutal
Yeah, I definitely did for a while. Like, even in like start when I started performing in like middle school and high school, even through college, like, I always had stage fright and just like the day of a show, I would be so anxious. I'd be like shivering the whole day and just putting Myself into like panic mode. And honestly I think it was just exposure therapy. Like enough time had passed for me performing where I'm like kind of getting into the groove of like, you got this and it will be okay and whatever happens and it's meant to happen and you can fix anything if something goes wrong, you know.

19:55
Kendall
Yeah.

19:56
Girl Brutal
So just putting, starting to put myself into a different mind space, like really just through experiences, like I've had to experience like fuck ups on stage before and. And you know, over time you learn on the fly how to fix certain mistakes and you just kind of get more comfortable. So I'm kind of to the point now. Like even the show I played last week at Black Box, like that was a really big show. It was nearly sold out and that's like a 1000 cap venue. Oh my gosh. Yeah. I was definitely like, whoa. But somehow like for the first time I was able to truly be like, I'm confident about this. I'm not nervous. Like, this is going to be great.

20:35
Girl Brutal
And it feels good to finally be in that spot compared to like where I started, like just truly having panic attacks like days of shows.

20:43
Kendall
No, that's wonderful to see and especially to like look back on your younger self and be like, oh, I've come so far.

20:49
Girl Brutal
Oh yeah.

20:51
Kendall
And I know you. We talked about this a little bit earlier and like developing that platform I looked on Spotify, you have like 2k, like monthly listeners. Is there a direction that. Have you used your platform, I guess to speak on like personal matters to you? Or is there a direction that you want to take that? Or do you keep it like strictly to your music, if that makes sense.

21:11
Girl Brutal
Yeah, I know what you mean. I feel like I more so keep it to my music only because a lot of what I'm making currently is instrumental and a lot more like techno psy. I mean, I guess, like I try to tell stories and evoke feelings of like personal past traumas or experiences. Like in my live music, I have a song about like, you know, body dysmorphia and you know, EDS that I've struggled with in the past. And you know, Heather being about like people on the scene who abuse their power, you know, or GBHC that was, you know, about police brutality. Like, I definitely do try to have a stance and share my experiences through my music. But more so now with it being instrumental, I just try to like evoke feelings and I, I really like that. That's like, I don't know.

22:04
Girl Brutal
When I like make a song, I Try to find, like, that feeling. Like, I get, like, a body tingle. I'm like, yeah, that's it.

22:10
Kendall
Yeah, for sure. Do you ever. Okay, I'm gonna, like, use a personal example of my life and then try to see if that speaks to you. So I like to write poetry, and sometimes I'll go throughout my, like, day and I'll see, like, a leaf falling from a tree or, like, some minor experience. I'm like, oh, I'm gonna write about that later. Does that, like, come to you with your music of, like, you experience something, like a feeling, or you see something in your day to day, and then you're like, oh, I can make this into a song.

22:38
Girl Brutal
Yeah. I think, honestly, I found most of my inspirations lately listening to, like, other artists, like, especially going to live EDM shows lately. I'll hear a track that, like, really speaks to me or makes me feel like sorrow or makes me feel like longing or anger. And I kind of am like, I want to make something that makes me feel like that or I'll hear, like, a sound, and I kind of want to experiment with that sound. So that's. That's more of where I feel like I get a lot of my inspiration from is just, like, taking away from other people's music and doing my own thing with it. But I mean, I've definitely had life experiences that I want to write about more as, like, an outlet. But I would say that more so than, like, anything else.

23:27
Kendall
Yeah, no, that makes sense. And do you have a favorite song that you like performing live or that you've created?

23:34
Girl Brutal
Yeah, I mean, Heather was definitely, like, the one that I was like when I released it, and people really loved it the way I did. I was like, heck, yeah, I'm excited. And that was definitely the song. Like, every show, I look forward to singing that one because it's kind of like the only song that I've made that is more like. It's a break from all the screaming. I can, like, sing a little bit, and it's kind of like, sparkly. I love the chorus. Yeah. I remember, like, when I made that song, it was for. There was this record label called Sugar Tank Records. They're like, more locally led. I think they're in the Triangle area or Asheville. I don't remember. But anyways, they wanted us to submit, like, two songs just for, like, collaborative, like, multiple artists thing.

24:20
Girl Brutal
And I made Heather for that. Just kind of for fun, like, not really thinking, like, this won't be a part of, you know, probably our main Thing, but, you know, it'll be a cool, like, difference than what I normally do. I sent the song in and they were like, it's too long. It can only be, you know, because it was for, like, a vinyl pressing, so it's too long. And I was like, oh, man. But I kind of like the song. Maybe people like it. I don't know if they will. So I just went on a limb and released it, and it ended up being, like, probably the biggest song that people enjoyed hearing. So it's just kind of an unexpected. Like, heck, yeah. I'm glad people love the song the way I do.

24:56
Kendall
No, that's wonderful to see, like, your personal aspirations being reflected into the crowd as well. I kind of want to get into, like, your life outside of music and your hobbies as, you know, a person rather than a dj. What does that look like for you? What is. What do you like to do outside of music?

25:16
Girl Brutal
Yeah, there. I mean, I work with animals in the vet field during the day. Yeah, I've been doing. Oh, shoot, my cat is being silly. I. I work at a vet full time, and that's kind of been something I've done for years now. Almost like since 2017. So about, like, a decade now.

25:35
Song
Wow.

25:37
Girl Brutal
Yeah. And I definitely have, like, a passion for it. Other than that. I mean, I love video gaming. Right now, I've been playing a crazy amount of Baldur's Gate.

25:47
Kendall
Okay. I've been hearing that game. So I have a lot of friends, that game, and they've been like, that's all I've been hearing. Out of their mouths.

25:53
Girl Brutal
It's so good. You've got to do it. Right now. I'm a high elf sorcerer. Yes.

26:01
Kendall
Yeah.

Girl Brutal
Yes. Anyways, that's super cool. I've been trying to get into, like, making more, like, rave candies as well. I feel like it's a really fun pastime, just like, putting on a TV show and just, like, making little bracelets and necklaces. Other than that, I mean, I really am, like, a lot of my free time, I'm playing music and preparing for, like, some sort of show, for sure. So I don't really have too many things outside of that.

26:30
Kendall
No, that's really cool. I mean, you have, like. You're a vet and a dj. Are you kidding? Like, that's kind of awesome.

26:37
Girl Brutal
Yeah. Yeah, for sure. It's. It's very fun. I'm not like a veterinarian. I just, like. I just help out, but, you know.

26:44
Kendall
Yeah. And if you could live anywhere in the world where Would you want to live?

26:52
Girl Brutal
I mean, I would love to go to Germany just because the techno scene out there is super intriguing. I would definitely love to be, like, versed in the culture out there. Either that or, like, if it were in the States. I really enjoy Colorado. Like, Denver is really pretty. I would love to live there. I'm from Arizona, so I'm kind of, like, used to the, like, I love the deserty, like, mountainous feel out there, but it's also not super hot, so it's always nice.

27:20
Kendall
No, it is nice. I miss the snow, honestly.

27:24
Girl Brutal
Yeah, I would love it. I would love it.

27:26
Kendall
When did you move to North Carolina from Arizona?

27:30
Girl Brutal
Probably, like. Probably like 2010 or 2011. So I was. I was super young, but I still have, like, childhood memories from out there. But all my, like, teenage years and adulthood has been spent here, and I honestly feel very lucky, for sure. Like, I feel like the universe kind of put me in the right place. Like, I feel like I'm where I need to be, for sure, so. Yeah.

27:52
Kendall
Yeah. And this mindset of, like, everything happens for a reason. Have you always kind of had that, or is that something that you've developed throughout your time as a DJ or just like a human?

28:03
Girl Brutal
Yeah, I feel like I've developed it, like, over the years, like, kind of realizing, like, people come and go, phases come and go. Like, I mean, I used to be, like, so passionate about, like, piano, and I did, like, music directing for, like, plays and stuff. And I really thought, like, I'm going to go to college for, you know, orchestra and do that the rest of my life. And then just everything changed, and now I could. Like, as much as I love that season of my life, like, I feel like it was preparing me for what I'm doing now. And just over the years, like, I feel like it's always been there, like, playing a song or hearing a song and being like, ooh, it would sound good with this, or it would sound good with that.

28:43
Girl Brutal
And, like, combining things on my own and then now DJing, like, that's the whole point, you know? So it kind of just feels like the people that I've met along the way and the connections I've made along the way that are so, like, one in a million, it just feels very, like, purposeful. And I feel like I've. I'm in the right spot and I've found my place. And it was. Everything that I've done has led up to it, you know, and it will continue to do that, too. Like, I'm sure I'M not going to DJ forever. Like, I'll probably find another genre of music that speaks to me and I'll start doing that, you know, like, it's just always been that way. And I think that's cool.

29:20
Kendall
No, that's wonderful and exciting to hear, too. It's just fun. And where can we find your music in your upcoming shows?

29:28
Girl Brutal
You can listen. I'm on all streaming, so Spotify, Soundcloud, I have DJ sets on soundcloud and singles on other streaming services. So if you want to listen to more techno, you can find me on SoundCloud. And if you want to listen to digital hardcore, then go on other things.

29:50
Kendall
That's wonderful. My last question for you, I. I got asked this question when I was interviewing for a job, like, a year ago, but I decided I like it, I'm gonna steal it. So if you. So you know how, like, coffee cups sometimes have, like, warning labels, like caution hot. Like, if you were a coffee cup, what warning label, per se, I guess, would you put on your own?

30:10
Girl Brutal
Oh, no. I don't know. Unexpectedly bouncy, maybe.

30:26
Kendall
Oh, that's perfect. I love it. And is there anything else you want to talk about today?

30:33
Girl Brutal
Can I shout out a couple friends?

30:35
Kendall
I think so. Yeah, totally. I think so.

30:39
Girl Brutal
I encourage people to listen to Tanzanite. That's tn.

30:45
Kendall
Wait.

30:45
Girl Brutal
Oh, my gosh. Tanzanite or something like that. God dang it. She. She's a local Charlotte dj. She makes a lot of original tracks. I feel like she's really going places, and I love her. And then my friend Poetic Note, who makes a lot of hypnotic techno, I encourage people to listen to her, too. They're two of my really close friends, and I feel like they're super authentic with their music, and I love them. And that's it.

31:12
Kendall
