Packapalooza is this Saturday, August 24th. And yeah, we've been looking forward to this for a really long time. It's our first time playing back in the triangle for a while and we love that. We're going to celebrate with all of the students coming back to school. It's been so fun.

How did you land this gig? Because I imagine NC State probably booked this like way in advance.

Yes. Well, that's actually a really good question and I feel like I should know the answer better. I like to think that it's because we just say party with our music and that's why they were like, oh, we gotta get Delta Ray. But I also think it might have something to do with the fact that we know a lot of folks in the NC State community and having been a band from Durham, North Carolina and lived there for 10 years, I don't know, maybe it's just a hometown vibe that they wanted to put out and so we're honored that we get to do it.

Yeah, we're definitely very excited. I know that WKNC will be there, not covering, but we're definitely excited to participate. We do a lot of musical things both on and off campus. So being able to go to an on campus musical event and not be the ones working and stressed out of our minds. We're like super stoked for this show.

Yeah. So considering you guys are from Durham, what's it like, I guess saying being a band for 10 years, being from Durham, what's it like going from starting as like a small local artist and now being able to play like larger national shows and like a university funded festival.

Yeah, it's so incredible. It's still a total dream. And I pinch myself frequently that this is my life. But no, I mean, we started out playing free popup shows with acoustic guitars at Loco Pops and the Durham Farmers Market.

Oh, my gosh. I mean, were. And, and were fine, but were raw, were unpolished. We were just throwing ourselves into it, fresh out of college ourselves. And Durham was the perfect place to start a band because it was a small town that loved music and it still is such a thriving music scene in Durham and Raleigh. And, you know, I think that we always hoped that we would tour nationally, but it took, I think it took those kind of massive tours and actually going internationally and playing huge festivals to. Now when we come back and we see the fans that, you know, met us for the first time at Loco Pops or the Farmers Market and they're still with us, that's where it's kind of like, oh, my gosh, this is full circle. This is humbling. And this is a.

Our dream coming true every day. So it's crazy. And if anybody out there is trying to make it in music, do not give up. You're going to be in that club scene for a long time. But it's slow and steady and it's. It's awesome if you stick with it.

I love this question because it reminds me just of, like, being a performer is a microcosm of just being a human being. But I feel like from the time that we started this band, you know, there was a lot of anxiety. It's like, you know, I want to be good and I want people to know who we are and I want our albums to do well. And we've been signed to two labels in our career and we just went independent. We announced it on July 1st of this year.

Thank you. And it's our fans. We took a leap of faith and our fans have caught us in such an insane way that, you know, it goes to show that success isn't, you know, careful what you wish for. You might think that success in the music industry is getting signed, and that's actually when the work begins. It's not when it ends. And it's always struggle to stay above the noise. The thing about us is that we are a family. It's me and my two brothers and we're best friends. I've known the other singer, Liz, the other female singer, since I was 7 years old. And we do at this point in our careers, our show is our meditation. It is like where we get up to go live our best life. So we're no holds barred. It's like a. An out of body experience.

Yeah. Then it is just a show. I mean, if you love harmony, if you love like gospel, reckless abandon, blow your voice out singing, that's what we offer. And meanwhile, everyone is banging on a trash can and a drum and crazy instruments you've never even seen before, and everybody's switching off and it's basically just like, I don't know, bacchanalia. Like, it's, it's wildness and it's. It's uncontained. And yet we've been doing it for so long that it's very tight and in tune with one another because we can harmonize in our sleep.

Yeah, exactly. And, you know, we, if you like, you know, artists like Fleetwood Mac or A Legend. Yeah, the Eagles, we try and, you know, pull from their catalog and their way of bringing their voices together, and we add our own kind of Southern gothic flair to it.

Well, that actually kind of leads me into my next question. As I'm sure you're aware. I mean, even the most unplugged person just rehashing that joke. Even the most unplugged person is aware of mainstream trends in both music and pop culture. And there is like a leaning towards, like, hip hop, rap, trap, and things like that. And that's just like, really what's popular at the moment. And of course, the south still has their roots in, like you said, gospel and more like rock and roll type things. Just to kind of generalize, being that you are a band that stays true to those southern roots, how do you make your own space in this mainstream industry that leans away from what you're making?

So, you know, I think that there is the beautiful thing about music, and the beautiful thing about the modern era of music too, is that, yes, there's value in kind of the purest forms of people emulating a style of music and doing it in the traditional way. But the. The real gold, I think, of our generation is the way that we are pulling from every type of influence and combining them with abandon. And I think that we actually are totally influenced by hip hop and that's a huge factor in our listening life. And I love to dance. So, like, I'm.

Plugged in, like on the Internet. But, like, when I'm out in the world, that is the type of sound that I'm seeking out. Something that we've actually done on this upcoming record we have coming out is we have performed using live instruments, but passing them through, like kind of unusual post processes like amplifiers and synthesizers.

That is a very modern way of creating music. Yeah.

But we live performed it, you know, like on an instrument. So it didn't happen in a digital space. It happened as like. And so, you know, that is one way where you can have both. You can still have an organic feeling, like, oh, my gosh, this is a living, breathing track. But you are pulling from these, you know, inspiring, innovating genres that are totally outside, you know, Southern Gothic, Americana, folk, gospel, whatever. The. I don't even know what genre we are, so I'm not. I never want to limit us. Exactly. They're so limiting, and it's so unhelpful. At the point of objective. I asked. Yeah, I asked people what music they like, and nine times out of ten people say, I like everything. And then they might say, the one exception. Yeah, yeah, the one exception.

And that's so funny because then I'm like, really? That's what you don't like? Do you like this? And they're like, oh, well, I love that. And I'm like, okay, well, that's exactly the genre you just said you didn't like. But that's how I categorize it. And you categorize it differently clearly in your mind. And so what are we even doing? What are we even talking about?

So I definitely think that Delta Ray is making a name for itself, as we discussed in the previous part of this interview. But as we said when defining a genre and things like that, there are things that artists have to do to make themselves stand out amongst other artists that are in that same stream of music. And one of the things that you did recently was you left a record label and made yourself independent. And we covered that a little bit previously in the interview. But as a now independent band, what are you doing to keep this train rolling?

That's really fun to tell you about because we are actually in the final week of a Kickstarter campaign, which is. Was the way we announced our independence was the day that we let everyone know that were leaving our record label. We also launched a Kickstarter to fund not just our third album, but our fourth album. And we asked our audience for 30,000 to make the third album, and if we could make it to 60,000 in 60 days, we would be able to fund two albums. So were really excited. We actually had Kickstarted our first album, all of Gosh now, nine years ago, and we'd exceeded our goal back then, and it was really exciting and it kind of was. How we got our start was that our fans were a part of making the record.

Well, this time when we launched our Kickstarter, went live so that people could kind of see us launch it in real time. What we didn't realize is that we would reach our goal of $30,000 in 30 minutes.

So the exciting news is now we're making our two albums, which we're calling the Light and the Dark. And they'll capture kind of the two sides of Delta Ray. One, that's the folk pop Americana with lots of big soulful gospel harmonies, and captures the sultry summer Southern sound. And then the Dark will be our witchy, raw Southern gothic album. And beyond that, we'll also do a live album. We're about to announce potential for an acoustic album and a holiday album. And what's exciting and the most exciting to me beyond these next two LPs, is. Is also a potential for a Southern gothic musical that will be kind of a mixture of our song Bottom of the river and the. The movie oh, Brother, Where Art Thou? And that's already kind of in creative process. But if we can reach our stretch goals, we'll.

We will record it and we'll even put it on as a full production. So we have got a lot of exciting stuff in the works. But I think in terms of what we thought might happen if went independent, we've kind of blown that idea out of our. Out of the water. Our fans have. Have blown our minds. So we're having a truly.

Yeah, it's insane. Our fans are. We call them the Delta Ray diehards and sick. They are incredible. And, you know, the. The biggest gift, honestly, has been how, you know, the number of people backing us. And also just the anecdotes, the personal anecdotes about our music. It's like, I keep feeling like I'm, like at my own funeral where people are saying the sweetest things about me and, man, I'm.

I know, right? It kind of already is nice. Certainly a lot of songs about death will be on the dark, but we have a me a way of making those songs about death even a little bit hopeful. So don't. Don't worry if it's a yin and yang. There's always a little bit of light in the dark and a little dark.

Worst case scenario, if a fan listening in gets just far too depressed listening to the dark, they'll have the light to tune into. And that's the whole thing, uplift their spirits.

Yeah. We've already got some of the singles done and ready to go and we're working on wrapping it up first part of next month. As soon as the Kickstarter ends on August 30th, we will be in the studio and tying up loose ends and we will release our first single in October. So, yeah, it's a quick rollout, it's a quick turnaround, but it's. It's also been four years since we've released an album, so these songs have been waiting in the wings and, you know, the music industry is. As much as you'd like to hope that it's an artist friendly place, it's not so much. So now that we get to just control it ourselves, we've got to open the floodgates and let loose some of this music we've been holding onto.

I guess my follow up question for that would be, do you guys ever stop? Do you ever get a break? And if not, how do you keep your head screwed on tight?

It's funny, I. You want to do what you love, right? Like, that's the dream.

And then the reality is that you work every day. Absolutely love it so much. And it's. I mean, Delta Ray is our baby. Like, we just. I do feel like I would argue.

You'd hope, you'd hope, but you never really get to take your hands off the wheel and you shouldn't. You know, there's never going to be anybody who you get to hand it off to, who's going to care about it the same way you do. So of course, it's a privilege to, you know, do what we do and create what we create and connect with people the way that we do. But I would say, you know, no, you don't really get many days off, especially with social media, unless you just turn off your phone and unplug. But we get dozens of messages from fans a day, and I answer all of them. And I think that is really the work worth doing beyond the creative, which definitely requires that you unplug and you go into that solitary space.

Then it's really a matter of making sure that the music reaches people. And once it does that, you know, they feel bonded to it. And. And that they know that, you know, the person on the other end who's creating the music cares. Cares how it's being received and cares about the people listening. Because I find that's been just a huge gift in my life is getting to know the people who resonate with the music that we make it. I feel like that's what life is kind of all about, is not only being able to pull something out of the kind of creative source space and bring it into the world, but then as a performer, I love to see the reaction and to see how it impacts people. So, yeah, I'm. Right now, I'm out on a farm in the middle of the.

Burnout is definitely something that I'm pretty sure most college students are aware. And if they're freshmen and haven't really started their college experience yet, they will know soon enough. Tiny little baby freshman hearts. So in the spirit of freshmen, you know, kind of coming up and things like that, what are some goals that you have for Delta Ray going forward? Now that you, of course, have mentioned your third and fourth. Fourth albums, a potential, like, concept Album, musical going on. What are other things that you look forward to doing that you haven't done or even started yet?

Well, you know, we are. We're an ambitious group, and I think that we. Beyond creating the music and recording, we have big ideas around a stage show and not just any concert, but, you know, we imagine, like, an immersive performance experience for our fans. It already kind of feels that way. Like, we really try. We'll go out into the crowd and sing a song. And. We built a haunted chapel in Nashville last year. Wow. That had animated windows that kind of set you in the middle of a storm, you know, during our song Chasing Twisters or, you know, lit up with flames during our song Fire. And, you know, we just kind of themed the experience around the music you were hearing, and I think we'd love to continue to dive into that. Making magic for people is really beyond.

Well, I think music is magic. I think it's magic without any kind of trick. Like, how do I get. How do I know that this song is going to give you goosebumps? How do I elicit that response in my audience just by embodying this lyric and this harmony? Like, how do I. That's magic to me. That human response is so powerful and innate. So I think we want to just explore how to make that even bigger and more transformative and more transcendent. And that's always the goal. So we're going bigger and better with every door. And so when we go out with our album Delight next year, we'll find a way to make it feel like the light. It'll sound like the light, it'll feel like the light. And similarly, when the dark comes, watch out. It's gonna be scary. It's gonna be with.

Yeah, right. Well, that's the whole idea with the musical, too, is not just a thing you'd see on a stage, but something you'd walk into an old abandoned church, and the whole thing would start to unfold around you. So that is the dream. The dream is just to keep going, to keep growing and to reach more places. We've traveled to the Middle east and Australia, Europe a number of times, down in Mexico, and we've been all over, even Africa. But I think we would love to do that more and keep bringing our music to more people and keep it. Having people share it. I think when you create music that resonates with people, the best compliment you ever get is people sharing it with their loved ones and friends. That.

My next question would be, do you find that when traveling across the world and things, do you like a good feedback from people outside your home country? I'd be very interested to hear more about your fan interactions, like on other continents.

Yeah, I mean, I think that it's been pretty exciting to see people's reactions in Europe. You know, we in Germany and the Netherlands and the uk. It was really nerve wracking to perform these songs because you also get the feedback of like, oh, they're gonna react this way. Don't be surprised if they do this. And the reality was there's so much passion, and especially anybody who shows up at a show like that has either heard of you before or is a music connoisseur, you know, is saying, like, I want to go out to the club and basically find what's going on.

Experience it. Yeah. So that was amazing. And we've had. We've garnered a lot of die hard fans that way. And we played Byron Bay Blues Fest in Australia. And I mean, they were a rowdy crowd. So fun. Still have people, you know, keeping up with us from there. Even though that was a number of years ago and we played naval bases in the Middle east and Africa and, you know, that was a unique experience for a number of reasons, but we got to experience a totally different lifestyle and culture. And then also now when people come back home from their deployment, we get to see them back on American soil. And that's been really special and powerful and a lot of really cool bonds, lifelong bonds. So it's like I said, like, we're just so privileged that this is what we get to do.

And I think that, you know, as a southern band, we bring a really strong message of empowerment and equality and all of that with us wherever we go.

And you have to have that Southern hospitality with you.

Yeah, you do. And you also have to kind of let people know that we're. Yeah, we're just. We're defining the south with what we love about the South. And I think that's a powerful thing. And if you can bring that beyond your borders, you're just, you're an ambassador. So we try and be a good one.

I guess this is probably something that you've heard of, but every band that gets pretty big and starts doing tours always, inevitably gets a horde of fans in their DMs saying, like, come to Brazil. Have you gotten those yet?

We have not. And our Liz, our other female singer, she is fluent in Spanish and has started to teach herself Portuguese because I think she feels like she needs to communicate to all of our Brazilian fans, like, yes, we would love to come if we have the opportunity, we will be there. So no, we haven't been to Brazil yet. But.

If not, how do you attempt to undertake this task? They are a resilient populace.

Yeah. Anybody are trying to get into the music industry, it is really important that you have a strategy if you're going to start going international because it's expensive. And if you're a single artist, you can do it much more easily because you can find the cheap flights and you can, you know, leave at a moment's notice potentially and jump on bills or, you know, play club shows. But when you're a six piece or seven piece act, like we are, with a little bit of a crew, rolling out international shows is extremely expensive. So we at this point need not only, you know, anchor dates is what you call them when you've got a show that basically is like sponsors you to get out to Australia or the UK. But then you need a radio strategy.

You need some incentive to keep those roots watered and growing. Otherwise you just start from scratch every couple of years where you go back and nobody's ever heard of you again because it's been a couple years since you released a record and you don't like, I would. We went up to New York probably once a month for eight months when were starting the band just to get a toehold in New York and you can't do that with the UK unless you're made of money. So that's unless you're releasing a song to radio and have some kind of strategy around. We're going to do this festival and then in six months or four months we're going to come back and we're going to do this other show and that way you start to build. So that's definitely on our minds.

It may be that the Light and the Dark are released as a double album in the UK and we kind of take our time building the strategy around that. But it's a good question because it's totally on our mind.

Absolutely. It's definitely something that your international fans can look forward to not one album, not two, but potentially a double album and another tour. There is so much going on for Delta Ray fans. And I guess for a closing statement in this podcast, what are some final things that you'd like to say to your fans, potentially North Carolina State students, your fans who are musicians hoping to get into the industry themselves, and just those who are looking forward to hear what's coming next for Delta Ray.

Well, I'm so excited about Packapalooza and seeing everybody at NC State on Saturday. I am really excited that y' all are going back to school, and I hope that everyone's feeling that anticipation. And if, you know, I think I would say for just thinking about it, you know, my brothers went to school together so that they could keep making music. And I graduated school early so that I come out and join the band. And Liz left her, you know, international travels to come join the band. And we've all known each other forever. So the bonds that you're building right now, going back to school, NC State students, you know, could be the ones that kind of define life moving forward. And it doesn't have to just feel like work. It can feel really fun and exciting.
